A stellar performance at the weekend in the South Australian sand has moved Byron Bay's Tom McCormack into the Junior Outright lead in the Yamaha Australian Off-Road Championship (AORC).McCormack, 16, won the hotly contested Junior Outright and Junior Lites Class in round six on Sunday. The Pro Motorcycles Yamaha Queensland Enduro Team rider now leads Junior Outright by eight-points and his class by one-point going into rounds seven and eight of the championship, to be held at Warwick (QLD's) Cherrabah Resort on August 15th and 16th. "I'm really happy with how the weekend turned out, I'm where I want to be now," McCormack said. "Now I'm just going to work really hard the next couple of weeks and try to pull it off again in the Queensland rounds." McCormack said his victory had not come easily, with extremely tough competition from the large field of Junior racers. "I had a heap of compeition this weekend. There was Ben Burrell, Jake Wright, who's a motocrosser from Cairns, and Dale Blackwell and they were all riding really well," he said. "The times were really close all day [Sunday] and it came down to the last lap." McCormack finished third in his class in Saturday's round five and said he was struggling a bit to adjust to the sand. "I found it hard to get used to the track straight up on Saturday, I've been training in sand, but South Australia was very unique," McCormack said. "The tracks were really rough and definitely after the pro's rode them they were very challenging. I thought they were really hard to ride and keep on the bike. "I changed a bit of my bike set-up on Saturday night and it worked awesome for me on Sunday. "I was lucky enough to have a new YZ250F for the race and it went awesome." Tom's next national competition will be the Queensland rounds of the AORC to be held at Warwick's Cherrabah Resort on August 15th and 16th.
