The Wellard Yamaha Junior Development Team came up against some of the worst elements that mother nature could throw at them for the fourth State Championship round at the hardpack Eric Walter circuit. Not since the 2002 Junior Nationals has the Chidlow track seen as much rain in one meeting. With staying on two wheels a priority the team went to work.250F mounted Pro team rider Daniel Strickland (Five Star Yamaha) was looking to extend his Championship lead of the younger age four stroke division. Protecting his four point lead was as big as the inclement weather. After dropping into third on the first corner of race one, Daniel made a decisive pass for the lead and started to checkout from the field when a berm busting move, high sided him and the following crash really rung his bell. To his credit he remounted in dead last and rode back to ninth. With no recollection of the crash or the race there was some concern for the young charger but he opted to go out for the next two races where he went 1, 2 with the last result being lucky indeed as while leading on the last corner just before the finish flag the front brake locked on caked full of mud stopping the wheel from turning and causing him to crash just meters from the line. A gutsy effort from the exhausted rider saw him man handle his bike across the line while only dropping one position. "Today was really tough, the conditions and the crash were hard to deal with. I was glad to have Fox roll off's as they really helped in the mud as I still had pretty good vision while others were throwing off their goggles. To increase my lead to twelve points is a real bonus with only two rounds to go" a dirty but happy Daniel commented. Pro team 85cc riders Jayden Rykers (Mandurah City Yamaha) and Kyle Webster (North City Yamaha) had a mixed bag of results in the harsh conditions. Jayden faired a little better than his team mate going 3, 2, 4 to pick up third outright for the day. This was not before a spectacular first corner crash that eventually had the race red flagged with eighteen bikes involved and Jayden at the bottom of the pack. "I was really lucky for the red flag coming out as from the bottom of the pack I was going nowhere" Jayden stated. Kyle was in the same boat as his fellow 85cc pilot and tried to keep his Yamaha on two wheels throughout the day, but the treacherous conditions assured that a crash was imminent at some point in the race. "My first two rides were not too bad but I crashed a couple of times in the last one dropping down in the order" I still managed fourth outright not what I wanted but it was the best I could do" The slightly dejected rider had to say. (Kyle did save it in the picture above) Satellite rider Shaun Cornick (Highway Yamaha) had a great day playing in the mud. Riding in the 125cc and 250F older division Shaun put in three solid rides in each class to capture a second place podium in each division. "I needed to borrow some of my team mates riding gear as six races in this stuff meant I was filthy all day. Both my Yamaha's never missed a beat and I am Second in the 125cc and third on the 250F in the Championship so that is great for the team" Another satellite rider in Jonty Thomas brought home the team's fifth podium for the day when he rode the wheels off his YZ 125 to pick up second outright for the event. Jonty had great starts and was able to lead for much of the racing but the conditions caused him to make a few small mistakes causing him to drop back a little. "I believe my results this week were the result of the condensed YETP training the whole team did earlier on in the week. We spent two days at Hendley Park in Byford with Stephen Gall, Tim Cole and Matt Haskins. It certainly has improved my riding" an Ecstatic Thomas had to say. "Once again the Wellard Yamaha team has taken home a swag of silverware. Five more podiums at this meeting meant that Yamaha placed in almost every division. All our advertising partners are really getting good value from the team this year" Team Manager Peter Strickland offered up.
