Supercross World Champion Chad Reed has thrilled the 12,000 strong crowd at the first ever round of Super X at Perth’s Kwinana Motorplex today, dominating every session and throwing down the gauntlet to his Australian challengers. Rain and strong winds hampered the earlier heats but cleared for perfect weather in time for the two final races of the day. Reed won the 20-lap Super X Main Event from fellow ex-pat Daniel Reardon (Honda) and reigning Australian Motocross Champion Jay Marmont (Yamaha). After an initial challenge from Reardon and Cheyne Boyd, Reed rode a concise and consistent race and by the time the chequered flag fell, the World Champion had lapped the field to fourth position. “That was awesome out there,” Reed acknowledged. ”It was so satisfying to see it all finally come together. “This was my first Supercross race on a Suzuki so I just tried to check out and watch for lapped traffic. “I know these guys will step it up between now and Adelaide and I am sure the new Super Sprint format will throw up some interesting results,” he added. While today was the first time many of the Australian riders had experienced a full size Supercross track, they revelled in the challenge, none more so than Lites riders Jake and Matt Moss who missed their sister’s wedding to compete at the series debut. It was action aplenty throughout the Lites races with reigning champion and series favourite Ryan Marmont (KTM) almost ruled out of the final after colliding with the bike of fallen rider Robbie Marshall during practice. The 15-lap Lites final belonged to the Moss twins, with the brothers battling it out for the race win ahead of Tye Simmonds, who at 16 years of age was making his Lites debut. Despite nursing a broken hand Jake held out his twin and Simmonds to win his first ever Supercross Lites final. “I was in so much pain I nearly flew home two days ago to get my hand fixed,” Jake explained “Matt put some pressure on me early on but I stayed consistent and pulled a gap early with allowed me some breathing space towards the end. “I am pumped to be here this is my first ever Lites Supercross win,” he added. While Reed’s attention will now turn to the US Open in Las Vegas on October 11 the Australian based riders will prepare for Round 2 of the series which will be held at the Adelaide Showgrounds on Saturday October 18.
